Shrimp export growth is expected to accelerate in 2018

[BNEW.VN] - According to Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), shrimp exports continue to grow strongly in 2017, export turnover is estimated at 3.8 billion USD, up 22% compared to 2016.

This shows the efforts of enterprises in the context of complicated market situation. With the current growth momentum, VASEP also forecasts that shrimp exports will continue to grow positively in the future, especially in some markets such as EU, China, Japan and Korea.

According to VASEP, shrimp industry is considered a big success in EU market in 2017. In 11 months 2017, shrimp exports to this market reached over 780 million, up 42.4% over the same period last year. With this result, the EU is the largest importer of Vietnamese shrimp, accounting for 22.2% of total shrimp exports.

Particularly in individual EU markets, the Netherlands is currently the largest importer of Vietnamese shrimp. In the three main import markets of Vietnam shrimp in the EU (Holland, England and Germany), exports to the Netherlands increased by the most 70.5% reached 199.7 million; followed by the UK and Germany respectively 54.5% and 5.9%.

According to Truong Dinh Hoe, Secretary General of VASEP, shrimp exports to the EU increased sharply in 2017 mainly due to the advantage over some competitors supplied by the low GSP. Currently, under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) that the EU gives to Vietnam for frozen shrimp (HS code: 030617) is 4.2%; Processed frozen shrimp (HS 160521) is 7%. Meanwhile, Thailand and China are not eligible for EU GSP.

In addition, in the EU market, Vietnamese shrimp has to compete with Indian and Ecuadorian shrimp. However, India tends to reduce shrimps exports to the EU, due to antibiotic contamination and facing EU import bans.

On the part of exporters, in order to enjoy preferential tariffs from the EU, businesses buy shrimp in the country at higher prices. In order to increase profits, enterprises have concentrated on investing in deep-processing products in order to increase their value when exporting.

According to businesses, the value of Vietnam shrimp exports to the EU is quite positive as EU consumers prefer value-added seafood products and increase imports to meet the needs of year-end festivals. . Meanwhile, the source of cold water shrimp is high prices and the supply is reduced, so EU shrimp imports from Vietnam.

Outside the EU, shrimp exports to China were up 60.2 percent to $ 637.9 million in the first 11 months of 2017. Shrimp exports to the United States, meanwhile, fell 7.8 percent year-on-year. 2016. This decrease is mainly due to the high anti-dumping duty in POR11. In addition, India boosted shrimp exports to the United States to offset the decline in other major markets, resulting in a drop in the market share of Vietnamese shrimp in the US market.

Many positive signals

According to estimates of enterprises, the export turnover of this industry must reach at least 12-15% per year in order to export shrimp up to USD 10 billion by 2025.

To achieve the above objectives, enterprises are focusing on promoting production and export, especially the production of deep processing products, flexible export to large markets are in demand of shrimp imports. With the current growth momentum, VASEP also forecasts that shrimp exports will continue to grow positively in the future, especially in some markets such as EU, China, Japan and Korea.

Remarkably, in China, the production of domestic shrimp production in the country declined due to disease and floods. Meanwhile, increasing domestic demand, due to the middle class and the increasing number of tourists, has increased the demand for seafood, especially shrimp in restaurants.
Accompanying this, since December 1, 2017, shrimp exports to China are more advantageous when it decided to reduce import tax from 5% to 2% for frozen shrimp products. With the current growth momentum, China is likely to surpass Japan to become the second largest import market for Vietnamese shrimp in the first quarter of 2018.

On the other hand, according to VASEP, the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) is expected to take effect in 2018 which will create more favorable conditions for shrimp exports. According to the schedule of commitments, when EVFTA comes into effect, tariffs on HS 03061100 shrimp (chilled green lobster, HOSO, frozen shrimp, shrimps ...) to EU will be 0% instead of current at 12.5%; Tariffs of HS 03061710 (frozen fresh tiger prawns, frozen tiger prawns, frozen shrimp, etc.) are also 0% from the current 20%.

For processed shrimp, HS 16052110 (shrimp paste paste) and shrimp HS 16052190 (other shrimp) will be adjusted from 20% to 0% after 7 years from the effective date of the Agreement force.

Although there are many advantages, but in 2018, forecasting this industry will face many difficulties and challenges, including the quantity and quality of shrimp. With the current weather conditions erratic, the risk of weather and disease is still a major threat to shrimp production.

According to Ho Quoc Luc, General Director of Sao Ta Food Joint Stock Company, the most challenging problem of Vietnam's shrimp industry is that most of the production is small scale farming, leading to traceability. more difficult. Meanwhile, in 2018, all shrimp import markets in Vietnam are "seriously" the problem of food safety and traceability of products, especially the program monitoring seafood imported into the US (SIMP ) has been in effect since the beginning of this year.

To ensure food safety, factories often have to spend more on quality control of input materials, resulting in higher product costs, Vietnamese enterprises are difficult to compete with other shrimp supply.

In this context, the quality control, building material areas to meet international standards are still issues that the shrimp industry needs to focus on to overcome weaknesses, so that enterprises can accelerate exports in 2018.
